Chora Church (Kariye Camii in Turkish) is the most interesting Byzantine church after Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The importance of the church does not come from the building itself , the frescoes and the mosaics are superb and reflect the magnificient heritage of Byzantine Art. The Chora Church Museum is open every day from 9 a.m to 4:30 p.m except Wed. The admission fee is 10 YTL. (6,5 EUR or 8 USD)

The word “Chora” means “in the countryside” in Greek because of the original church which was outside the city walls. There are no remains left from the original church and the first form of the present structure dates back to 11C. The church was founded by Maria Doukaina, mother-in-law of Alexius Comnenos I between 1077-1081. Today’s church was constructed after two centuries, the walls were revetted with superb mosaics and a pareclession was added decorated with beautiful frescoes. The founder of the church was Theodore Metochites who served as a prime minister during the time of EmperorAndronicus Palaeologus I. He was also an astronomer, poet, theologian and philosopher. Actually he lived a very sad life, after Palaeologus was replaced by another emperor, he was sent to exie. After he came back to Konstantinople, he devoted himself to the church as a monk and he died there. Early in the 16C, the church was converted to a mosque by Atik Ali Pasha and the mosaics were covered with plaster. In 1948, it was restored by Byzantine Institute of America and opened as a museum in 1958.
The mosaics in Chora Museum dates back to 14th C and they can be divided into 4 parts, the ones on the nave, outer narthex(entrance), inner narthex and frescoes in pareclession(funerary chapel)

Parecclesion; The pictures here are frescoes. This chapel was designed to be a burial place. Among the major frescoes in the parecclesion are as follows: (47) Anastasis, the Resurrection. Christ, who had just broken down the gates of Hell, is standing in the middle and trying to pull Adam and Eve out of their tombs. Behind Adam stand St. John the Baptist, David and Solomon. Others are righteous kings; (48) The Second coming of Christ, the last judgment. Jesus is enthroned and on both sides the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist (this trio is also called the Deesis); (49) The Virgin and Child; (50) Heavenly Court of Angels; (51-52) Moses.

Bosphorus is the name of the strait which lies between Europe and Asia. The strait Bosphorus connects the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea and its length is approximately 30 km., 21 mile long. It runs in the general direction of NE to SW and varying greatly in width from 700 m. 0.45 mile to over 3500m. 2 miles at its widest. Its depth is generally 50-75 m., 150-200 feet but at some points reach to 100 m. 300 feet. There are two strong currents in the sea, one is from the Black Sea towards the Sea of Marmara which runs from the surface due to the low salt density and level difference of two seas. The other current lies from the reverse side, from the deep, towards the Black Sea. Because of the dangerous currents and the narrowness of the strait, all the ships passing through the strait should have pilot captains.
Bosphorus Cruise is a must-see tour for the Istanbul visitors because it is a wonderful opportunity to observe the both sides of Istanbul. There are municipal ferries which operate daily three times from Eminonu, port number 3.(BOGAZ HATTI). The first ferry is at 10:35 am (runs all year round), the second one is at 12:00 am and the last one is at 1:35 pm. (only in summer).The ferry is a traditional one, which has seats inside and outside the interior. After the ferry departs, it first makes a stop in Besiktas, which is the downtown of the city. The Dolmabahce Palace could be seen here.
Later, you see the beautiful houses along the European Side, the Ciragan Palace Hotel and many other lovely buildings from 19th and early 20th C. On the way, the ferry passes by the huge European Fortress which was constructed by Sultan Mehmed II in 1452 before he conquered Istanbul. Then the ferry moves to the Asian Side and you see the old restored Turkish Houses(Yali) which are just on the waterfront. In Bosphorus, there is no low-hide tide, so the houses can be so near to the sea level. Then the ferry passes through “Kanlica”, a lovely village which is famous for its yoghurt. And it passes to “Yenikoy “on the European Side and makes another stop. In Yenikoy, Turkey’s ex prime minister Mrs. Tansu Ciller has a big Yali(old restored Turkish house). Then the ferry goes back to Asian Side and then comes back to Europe, to a fishing village called “Sariyer”. If one likes, he/she may leave the ferry and come back to city after having a walk in Sariyer or if one wants to enjoy it all day long, he/she can stay till the ferry comes to Anadolukavagi. It is a great place to have fish, fresh vegetables, fruits and raki, traditional Turkish drink. After staying there for two hours, the ferry comes back to Eminonu, where one gets on the ferry.
Aboard the ferry, you may enjoy fresh orange juice, apple tea, ordinary tea and yoghurt which are sold by loud waiters….”Orange juuuice, apppleee teeeaaa, yoghııırt…

The Grand Bazaar (or Covered Bazaar, Turkish: Kapaliçarsi ("Covered Bazaar")) in Istanbul is one of the largest covered markets in the world with more than 58 streets and 4,000 shops, and has between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily. It is well known for its jewelry, pottery, spice, and carpet shops. Many of the stalls in the bazaar are grouped by type of goods, with special areas for leather coats, gold jewelry and the like. The bazaar contains two bedestens (domed masonry structures built for storage and safe keeping), the first of which was constructed between 1455 and 1461 by the order of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror.

The bazaar was vastly enlarged in the 16th century, during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, and in 1894 underwent a major restoration following an earthquake.Major sectionsThe Grand Bazaar is a massive labyrinth of 4000 shops lining up the flanks of 58 covered streets.Inner Bedesten : It was the first building to rise in Kapaliçarsi, actually it is the Old Bedestan which forms the backbone of the bazaar. The names of the gates are: Bouquinistes, Hat Shops, Jewelry Shops and Costume Shops.Sandal Bedesten : It has the most number of domes in Kapaliçarsi. At present it can be accessed through two gates, one is through the main gate and the other is through the Nuruosmaniye district.Other sections of the Grand Bazaar: The architectural design of the roads making up other sections apart from the two bedestens is not symmetrical and geometrical; it has a scattered nature due to its formation which took many centuries with new parts being added. In this way, it stays away from the closed bazaar style of the West and has a character of an Oriental bazaar. This laid back settlement and scattered nature prevents the bazaar from being dull, and at the same time gives it a romantic flavour. The Spice Bazaar, (Turkish: 'Misir Çarsisi', Egyptian Bazaar) in Istanbul, Turkey is one of the oldest bazaars in the city. Located in Eminönü, it is the second largest covered shopping complex after the Grand Bazaar. There are different accounts regarding the origin of the name of the bazaar. Various spices from the Orient were offered here in the past, Egyptian Bazaar was so named because the spices used to be imported from Egypt. On the other hand, in the Byzantine period, the site of the Spice Bazaar was the centre of corn trade. And the word misir has a double meaning in Turkish: "Egypt" and "corn". THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE

In the year 1453, the army of Fatih Sultan Mehmet II (Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror) conquered the city. First of all, the oldest buildings and the formerly magnificent but dilapidated city walls were restored. On the ruins of the Byzantine foundations, the buildings of the basic institutions of the Ottomans were built. The great water system with its huge cisterns was repaired and returned to use. The city had developed its Ottoman identity, resembling its present character.

With the addition of the buildings of the famous architect (Mimar) Sinan, the city had again become the capital of a great empire. Together with the remaining population after the conquest, people coming from all over the empire, from all kinds of ethnic origins and religions, created a colorful mixture. In Istanbul - the new Constantinopolis - the cultural variety brought in by the immigrants enriched the cultural texture of the city. The bedesten where the merchants were settled and the many hans where the craftsmen were to be found turned into centers that enabled this harbor city to develop trade with the outside world. Huge markets were built, further supporting trade. During the period of the height of Ottoman imperial power, the city was covered all over with tulips, in what is known as the"Tulip Era." In the 19th century, efforts of modernization were undertaken. Istanbul entered the 20th century worn out and burdened by its history as the capital city of three great empires. At that time, the Ottomans were just about to end their imperial period of 630 years.

Think of shopping in Istanbul and it is probably the Grand Bazaar that first springs to mind.The Grand Bazaar first saw its beginnings as 2 wooden bedestans, or warehouses with individual cells for stalls, named the Cevahir Bedesten and Sandal Bedesten, erected during Mehmet the Conqueror's reign towards the end of the fifteenth century.

In this way they supported each others trade and formed a closely knit family. However this tradition no longer continues today.

Shopping centers have become a part of daily life in Istanbul, and there are now several in different parts of the city. They fit in well with the rapid pace of life today, saving precious time by offering a wider diversity under a single roof. Istanbul is no stranger to the shopping center, with its traditional covered bazaars like the Kapaliçarsi, (the famous Grand Bazaar), the Egyptian Bazaar and shopping streets like Mahmutpasa. But in past times shopping expeditions to these centers were different in concept. In the days leading up to important events like religious holidays, weddings or engagements, it was customary for the whole family to go together to buy new clothes, shoes, handkerchiefs, and household linen and other domestic articles for the trousseaus of girls about to be married. On such special occasions shopping had a ceremonial character.

Modern shopping centers, on the other hand, are not only places to shop but also to pass the time and in various leisure pursuits and forms of entertainment. While these modern malls cannot be said to harmonize with the cultural texture of the city in architectural terms, and are not perhaps aesthetic, they make full use of the latest technology and offer facilities completely unrelated to shopping. For example, in the center of Galleria there is an ice skating rink, while Carousel has a roundabout in the middle, to name but a few. Galleria was Istanbul’s - and indeed Turkey’s - first modern shopping mall. Situated in the western suburb of Ataköy, it was opened by then prime minister Turgut Özal in 1988 and espoused as a symbol of modern life. For several years Galleria was without competitors, but it had blazed a trail down which others were to follow.

Akmerkez in Etiler, Carousel in Bakirköy, and on the Asian bank of the city Capitol and Carrefour opened in rapid succession. As well as locally make goods these centers contained shops selling world famous brand names. Galleria reflected the changing face of Turkey in the late 1980s, with scores of shops selling a wide range of goods which included a high percentage of imports, cafes and restaurants which made going there a popular day out. With its 140 shops Galleria attracts an average weekly total of 300,000 people, while on weeks when there are public holidays or special days like Mother’s Day this number can be as high as 500,000.In 1995 Akmerkez was declared to be Europe’s Best Shopping Center by the International Council of Shopping Centers, and in 1998 was selected as the World’s Best Shopping Center by the same organization and received the International Design and Development Award.

Akmerkez opened in 1993 and is visited by between two and two-and-a half million people every month. At weekends and before public holidays and new year the number of visitors soars to around 100,000 people daily. Akmerkez shopping center has 240 shops and a total floor area of 180,000 square meters on four floors. Above these rise two blocks of office premises of 14 and 17 stories respectively, and a 24 story residential block. The highest proportion of customers come from the surrounding districts of Etiler, Levent and Ulus, which are in walking distance, and from the European shore of the Bosphorus. They generally visit the center during the week and do most of their household shopping here.

The second group of customers come from districts slightly further away, such as Nisantasi But at weekends people from all over the city are to be found here. Visitors spend an average 3.5 hours in the center, compared to the world average of 2.5 hours. During the summer, excursions are organized to the shopping center from nearby hotels, and during the winter there are bus services from large business centers such as Sabanci Center, Yapi Kredi Plaza and Maya Center.Capitol shopping center also opened in 1993, and is now visited by 12 million people a year. It has 120 shops, 8 cinemas, cafes and open and closed car parks.

There is also a ticket sales service for art and cultural events all over Istanbul.One of Istanbul’s youngest shopping centers is Polcenter, which opened in Levent on 16 December 1998. It has 52 shops and covers an area of 15,000 square meters The majority of its customers are from the banks and companies which have offices in the area. Atatürk Airport in Istanbul is Turkey’s largest airport. From here you can travel to many destinations, both in Turkey and worldwide. Most airlines have offices in such central areas as Taksim, Beşiktas
Atatürk Airport (The Yeşilköy Airport) Atatürk Airport first opened as a civilian airport in 1912, and was opened to international air traffic in 1953.

The airport is spread out over a total area of 9.470.554 square meters, and includes a 62.500 square meters domestic terminal and a 179.000 square metre international terminal and 186.000 square meters new terminal complex. It is Europe’s largest airport. The airport serves a total of 7,5 million travelers and 14 million international passengers each year.

In addition to a variety of forms of public transportation that connect the airport to a variety of destinations in the city, the airport also runs its own bus service, known as Havaş. The Havaş bus service is significantly cheaper than taking a taxi. It departs from in front of the Municipality Art Gallery in Taksim every day at 5.00 a.m., 6.00 a.m., every half hour between 6.00 a.m. and 11.00 p.m., and on the hour from 11.00 p.m. to 1.00 a.m.

The bus service from Atatürk Airport to Taksim and other parts of the city runs on the same schedule. The trip takes around forty minutes.

The price per person varies depending on the destination (3,50-15 YTL).
The trip in the direction of the airport can often involve heavy traffic, especially during rush hour. It is always helpful to check the traffic conditions before setting out to the airport. If you take the coast road connecting Aksaray and Bakırköy to the airport, you are likely to experience less traffic.

The metro/light-rail system that departs from Kabataş, Eminönü and Aksaray offers an even less expensive way to reach Atatürk Airport.

Sabiha Gökçen Airport (the Kurtköy Airport) This airport, which is named after the world’s first female war pilot, Sabiha Gökçen is located on an area of 655 hectares. It has two airfields, each three kilometres in length, with a capacity to serve 55 planes. Each year, 3.5 million passengers and ninety thousand tons of cargo pass through Sabiha Gökçen.

If you are going to the Asian Side of Istanbul, we recommend that you use this airport. Havaş service runs from the Kozyatağı stop to Sabiha Gökçen Airport every day at the following hours: 4.30 a.m.-5.30 a.m.-8.00 a.m.-9.00 a.m.-12.00 p.m.-2.00 p.m.-5.00 p.m.-5.30 p.m.-6.30 p.m.-8.30 p.m.

The bus service from Sabiha Gökçen Airport to Kozyatağı runs according to airplane arrivals at the following hours: 9.20 a.m.-10.15 a.m.-1.40 p.m.-3.15 p.m.- 6.05 p.m.-6.50 p.m.-10.00 p.m.-10.30 p.m.-11.55 p.m.- 1.45 a.m. If you are at the European Side and need to get to Sabiha Gökçen Airport, you can catch a number of different buses that leave from the 4. Levent metro stop.

The trip takes about fifty minutes, and the cost varies depending on the destination (7 - 9,50 YTL).

If you want to enjoy a night of entertainment on the Bosphorus, then you should apply to Mehtap Tours, which is organized by IDO and a variety of different companies. After taking one, you will be able to acquaint yourself with the beauties of the Bosphorus as far as one is able. Some tours take a break to dine on fish in areas such as Anadolu Kavağı and Rumeli Kavağı while others offer food accompanied by live music on the boat itself.
The bus is leaving... Don’t miss it! City tours by bus are also available. These tours, which last a total of one hour and fifty minutes, allow you to be carried away by the entire beauty of the city all at once. These entertaining tours take place in double-decker buses, outfitted with open tops, leave from Sultanahmet Square at the top of each hour. They offer the easiest way for you to tour the city, and also provide you with detailed historical information about the city. These tours pass by sixty three different points on their route, from which you can view the important sights of the Historical Peninsula and the Bosphorus.
Among the Istanbul neighborhoods that these tours pass are Taksim, Tepebaşı, Şişhane, Unkapanı, Fener, Ayvansaray, Edirnekapı, Fatih, Şehzadebaşı, Unkapanı, Eminönü, Sirkeci, Cağaloğlu, Sultanahmet, Eminönü, Tophane and Kabataş. If you like, you can get off the bus at any of these stops, and board another bus when it passes.
In the summer months, these tours run from 11.00 a.m. to 05.30 p.m. You can purchase tickets from hotel reception offices, the ticket booths in Taksim and Sultanahmet, or when you board the bus. The price of the tour is 20 Euro for adults, 10 Euro for students and 12 Euro for the families with four people.
“The Sultan’s caiques” will astound youWould you like to experience Istanbul from a caique? Caique tours, which have not lost any of their past charm, will surely add to your enjoyment of the Bosphorus. They are the favourite of all Istanbul lovers.
Istanbul’s caiques were used for transportation within the city during the Ottoman period. Occasionally even “Sultanic caiques” which were decorated in sterling gold and jewels and were used when the sultans had to carry out the duties of the throne at sea, made trips on the Bosphorus.
