Istanbul tours & Sight seeing

Where to Visit Istanbul
If you plan to stay five days in Istanbul and want to spend it as efficient as possible, here are my suggestions for you. You can change the ranking of days upon your request.
After a relaxing day, now you can go back on the track and spare a day for the Topkapi palace and surrounding structures. Take a tram and get off at Sultanahmet station, when you walk to the Square, you will see St Sophia on you left and Blue mosque on your right. Turn left to the backside of St Sophia. This road will lead you to the Palace.

Before reaching the palace two important sights are the Fountain of Sultan Ahmed III and the "Sogukcesme Sokagi". You can easily catch the fountain with its attractive motives and nice Dom. "Sogukçesme Sokagi" with the old Istanbul houses, lays on the other side of the Fountain. Make a short walk in the street and watch for the renovated old Istanbul houses on the Edge of Istanbul Walls. Now you can lead to the big door where is the opening to the first courtyard. In the first court yard on the left side is the St Irene Church. To visit this church is under the admission of St Sophia museum, however I could only find a chance to visit once.

When you enter the Church there is a stone ramp, which descend s a long to the level of the interior. When you reach the interior you will see the semicircular front with semi-domed above and there are seats for the clergy. In the semi-dome, there is an ancient mosaic of a simple cross in a black border.

After your tour in the St Irene Museum, now lead to the entrance of the Topkapi palace. You will see a crowd waiting in front of the ticket offices. And you will easily catch the gate of Topkapi palace. Topkapi palace is open from 9:00 to 16:00 except Tuesdays. Entrance tickets are obtained from the gateway. There are different parts in the museum and each of them has a different entrance fee. The entrance to the Topkapi museum is 10 YTL, (~ 7,5 USD ) Entrance to the Harem is 10 YTL . Harem is inside the palace and has a separate entrance. In order to visit the Harem you need to wait for the tours, there are tours in every half an hour and Harem is closing at 15:30 hrs. (Closing hours represent last entrance time). I would suggest touring the palace first and visiting Harem later. Topkapi palace is probably one of the best palaces you can see on earth. You will definitely be impressed, one missing thing in the palace for me is as everything is on an exhibition you don't see a real reflection of how people were living in the past. Topkapi Palace could take your whole day, but you should spare some time for some other places. After Topkapi palace you can visit the Archeological museum . When you reach the first courtyard outside the palace, you will see the signs showing the Museum. Archeological museum is on the right side below the road. The entrance fee is 5 YTL (3 USD) Open all day except Monday, from 9:00 to 17.00.
When you are finished with the Archeological museum, just walk down the road and you will reach the entrance of Gulhane Park. If you want to relax a bit, a walk in the park will be very nice. Park has been re-organized recently and has a very nice looking with so many nice and colorful flowers. The day is not over yet. One more activity can fit for this day and this is a visit to Miniaturk. Miniaturk is a mini model park of Turkiye.
The park is open from 09:00 to 17:00. And in summer it is open till 20:00 hrs. So a late visit is still possible in summer days. On miniaturk Turkey's rich historical and cultural heritage is being displayed with their Marquet te's. If you plan a visit to Istanbul, this is a must see event, you should put in to your agenda. You can have snap to all main structures in Turkey in such a short time. After the Park or skipping the park after the museum, you shall w alk or take the tram to eminonu, to reach to Miniaturk I advice taking a taxi from Eminonu. It shall cost 9 -10 YTL (~ 6-7 USD) The entrance fee to the park is around 10 YTL (~ 7 USD). .

The park is located over on a 56-hectare area along the coast of the Golden Horn. Hagia Sophia, Aspendos Theater, Suleymaniye Mosque, Sumela Monastery, Fairy Chimneys, Mount Nemrud and the ancient city of Ephesus are some of those among the historical and cultural works of art in the park. There is also a small bridge, which is copied from the Bosphorus Bridge between Europe and Asia.
After Miniaturk you can again take a taxi to Eminonu and back to your hotel. Or since you are in Golden horn, a visit to "Cibalikapi" fish restaurant will be favorable.

Another Day in Istanbul. Dolmabahce Palace , Taksim Square, Istiklal Street and Galata tower are the sights of the day's program. Now we are going to take a bus from Eminonu to go to Dolmabahce Palace. In front of the ferry port, buses leaves to various parts of Istanbul. If you get on the Bus from Eminonu to Besiktas, you will pass in front of the Palace. You need to get a ticket for the bus and it costs 1,3 YTL, (1 USD). After 3-4 stops you will see a place where Sea buses and Ferries port (Kabatas), you need to get off from here if you happen to pass this stop do not mind you can get off the next stop and walk back.. When you stopped at Kabatas walk to the front and after 200 meters you will see the Dolmabahce palace on the Right side at the seaside. Dolmabahce palace is closed on Monday and Thursdays and open for public from 9:00 to 16:00. There are two parts on the palace "Selamlik" and "Harem", and both have different entrance fees. Fees are for Selamlik 12 YTL (~9 USD) and for Harem is 10 YTL. You can have a ticket for both of them for 18 YTL. On the entrance there are tour guides arranged by the palace and they are gathering people and you are touring the palace with small groups. You need to wear blue plastic covers to your shoes. Palace itself could remind you of the Versailles palace in Paris, however for me it is more elegant. During your visit you will stop inside the room of Ataturk, founder of the Turkish republic. He has passed away in this palace and his room is still kept in the same order. Note: Video Cameras and Photos are subject to an extra fee.

After your tour at Dolmabahce palace, you can visit the Taksim Square. you need the climb up the hill and reach the Taksim Square, a tough walking or you better take a taxi, should cost 3-4 USD max... Taksim square is the biggest square in Istanbul, many events are being celebrated on this square and it is always crowded. You can see the Ataturk statue at the end of the square and also you can see the nostalgic tram of old Istanbul. Tram operates at the Istiklal Street, which is one of the main pedestrian streets in Istanbul. The street, houses many restaurants, consulates, shops and fair grounds. It is a good alternative for shopping. And the atmosphere is very nice. I advice you to walk on this street till the end of it. You will enjoy this street and it may become one of your favorite places in Istanbul. This street is also nice at nights but could be dangerous after very late hours (2 am or so). At the end of the Istiklal street you will see an old metro which is coming from the 19 the Century. However you can keep on walking to the Galata tower. Where you can have a wonderful view of Istanbul. Galata tower was built in 1348 as a watchtower for fires. And today it's a favorable touristy place. After your tour at Galata tower, you can walk down the road and reach Karakoy, other side of Eminonu. Just pass the bridge and you are back to Eminonu.

Ortaköy is the place to visit on your last day. Ortakoy District is very favorable on sundays. If you are lucky and the sun is also shining, then you will definitely have memorable moments at Ortaköy. Ortaköy is one of the must see places at Istanbul and if you happen to be there on a Sunday, than you will enjoy more. A small part of the city, on the Bosphorus shore, hosts a Sunday market and weekend attractions for Locals. However it's attractive for Tourists also. You can find very interesting handmade stuffs as well as paints and silver accessories. The historical houses and streets are under protection and most have been restored. You can see people gathered around the Ibrahim Pasha fountain every day. Watching the sail boats docked at the wharf is an interesting sight also.. There are many coffee and teahouses, restaurants, fast-food shops in Ortaköy. Eating authentic Turkish food such as gözleme or eating Baked potato is a favorite thing.
Walking distance from Besiktas (A tough one). There are buses and regular taxis passing from the Region. Just at the edge of the Bosphorus Bridge (1st one). The buses that leaves to Ortakoy from Eminonu are 22, 22 RE And 25.

After Ortakoy, you can have a snap to Bebek also . Once, the Bay was for the fishing boats to secure themselves, now hosts the Ultra yachts and speed boats. Probably one of most elegant district of Istanbul with so nice houses and best view of Bosphorus. Bebek is also one of the richest districts of Istanbul. In the center of Bebek stood the Bebek mosque. Also the entrance of the Bosphorus University is nearby. If you have the courage to climb all the way up. The view from the top is enormous. Bebek is so nice to walk around. Walk on the coast and walk in the Bebek Park. Sit on a Bank and enjoy the beauty and silence. If you like desert, try he "Bebek Badem Ezmecisi", a delicious Turkish desert. Also there are very nice Cafes at Bebek. How to reach Bebek: There are regular buses from Eminonu, Besiktas & Taksim

St. Saviour Church of Chora

The present day St. Saviour Church of Chora dates back from the late 11th century and originally this was a church outside Constantine's original city walls and so it was named the Church of St Saviour in Chora... this literally means in the country side.

The Church was converted into a Mosque in 1510 by the grand vezier of Beyazid II and there after bore the name Kariye Mosque and now it is called KARIYE Mosque & Museum (Kariye Cami ve Müzesi).

The museum offers the finest example of Byzantine mosaic work in the city, as well as superb fourteenth-century frescoes depicting the Genealogy of Christ, the Life of the Virgin and Christ's Ministry.

This complex is often passed over because of it's inconvenient location in Istanbul's western edge near remnants of the old Constantinian Walls, built by Emperor Theodosius II in AD 413.

At Church of St.Saviour in Chora walls protected Constantinople from numerous onslaughts and were breached only twice: by the crusaders in the 1200s and by Mehmet the Conqueror in 1453.

Even though the Church was converted to a Mosque after the Conquest, the mosaics were merely whitewashed over and thus have been preserved for display in this secular museum, no longer used for any religious purposes.

St. Saviour Chora (Kariye Mosque & Museum ) is open everyday (except Tuesday) from 9:30 in the morning until 4:30 in the afternoon. Ph.(212) 631 92 41

Basilica Cistern

Basilica Cistern , YEREBATAN SARAYI

It is a Byzantine cistern from the 6th century and it is located at Sultanahmet Square Istanbul... in walking distance to HAGIA SOPHIA MUSEUM and BLUE MOSQUE(Sultanahmet Camii). Turks call 'Yerebatan Sarayi'(The Sunken Palace).
Well, however it is not a palace at all... it is an huge water storage place.

This cistern has fine brick vaulting supported by 336 Corinthian columns. It is the largest covered cistern in Istanbul, dating back to the Roman times. Its dimensions are 140 by 70 meters, and it is capable of holding 80.000 cubic meters of water.

The Basilica Cistern was actually the reservoir for the prodigious quantity of water required for the Byzantine Great Palace, and it is thought to date back to the reign of Justinian in 532. Later in Ottoman years it has been use for conception of complex of Topkapi Palace.

Cistern has a huge structure, measuring 140m (460ft) long and 70m (230ft) across, and it is virtually empty; only a couple of feet of water line the bottom. Some wooden walkways have been constructed for visitors. The atmosphere inside is so quite and beautiful. Also it is very nice place for cooling down after being outside for a hot summer day :)

This fabulous cistern was used for entertainment purpose in earlier years as a film set of the movie 'From Russia With Love', with actor James Bond.

In the cistern the light and music is fantastic, don't miss to visit! Very nice classical music accompanies the sound of endlessly dripping water.

YEREBATAN SARAYI is open every day, except Tuesdays. Ph. (212) 522 12 59

Speaking of the water; since offering water is considered as a good deed in the ISLAM religion, following the conquering of the city by the Ottomans, and during the restructuring of the city many fountains and water resources were built in the city. However, as the time passed by the majority were demolished and at the present day there are approximately 500 fountains and 70 water resources.

One of the this fountain is Sultan Ahmet the 3rd Fountain (Sultan Ahmet Çesmesi) which is located just in front of the Topkapi Palace. It was built in 1729.

The fountain has a spout on each of its four sides. This is a free-standing fountain with a beautiful roof which is inside is adorned with reliefs and inscriptions and surmounted by decorated golden leaves. Actually fountain is dry.

Suleymaniye Mosque (Sultan Suleyman the Magnificient)

Suleymaniye Mosque (Sultan Suleyman the Magnificient)

Suleymaniye Mosque is the second largest but finest and most magnificent of the imperial mosque complexes in the city. It’s as magnificent as its founder Suleiman the Magnificent and a masterwork of the greatest Ottoman architect, the incomparable Sinan. Suleiman the Magnificent is the 10th Sultan of Ottoman Empire who expanded the boundaries of the Empire far to Vienna’s City Walls. Conquering Vienna was his ultimate aim but he could not succeed.

The construction of the Suleiman’s Mosque began in 1550 and the mosque itself was completed in 1557. The mosque is actually a complex building with the tombs of Suleiman and his wife, Hurrem Sultan(Roxelana). The other buildings were finished some years later. The mosque is preceded by a courtyard with columns of the richest porphyry, marble and granite. At the four corners of the courtyard rise the four great minarets. The four minarets are said to signify that Suleiman was the fourth sultan to rule in Istanbul and the 10 balconies denote that he was the 10th Sultan of the Ottoman Dynasty.

Interior of Suleiman's MosqueEntering the mosque, there is a vast room, almost square in plan surmounted by a huge dome. The dome is 47 m., 150 feet and its diameter is 27.5 m, 87 feet. The stain coloured windows are lovely, the sunlight diffuses inside very nicely. The mihrab where the imam(priest) stands and the pulpit are Proconassian marble. There is also a marvellous woodwork inlaid with mother of pearl and ivory of the doors, window shutters and the preacher’s chair. There are also impressive calligraphic inscriptions by the most famous calligrapher of Ottoman Empire, Ahmet Karahisari and his pupil Hasan Celebi. The mosque is all carpeted with red prayer rugs all pointing South where Mecca is located. Next to the mosque are the turbes, the tombs of Suleiman and his wife, Hurrem(Roxelana). The tomb of Suleiman is revetted with beautiful Iznik tiles and quite impressive. There is also the tomb of great architect, Sinan in the same complex. According to the story, Sinan was the only architect who had the honour of opening an Imperial Mosque because Suleiman gave the key to Sinan which was given to him to open the mosque. Another saying says Sinan trusts the quality of the mosque so much that if there is any big earthquake happens, this mosque will never collapse, it will fall into the waters of Golden Horn as one piece, not in small pieces…

Dolmabahce Palace

Dolmabahce Palace

The word “Dolmabahce” in English means “The stuffed garden”. Because the Dolmabahce Palace is founded upon a reclaimed area by filling up the sea. It’s a beautiful 19th C palace right by the Bosphorus, on the waterfront. It’s in baroque and rococo style and very French. Many people think that it is a small model of the palace of Versailles in Paris, France. It can be visited with a tour guide of the palace as a group. Open everyday from 9:30-17:00 except Mon and Thu.

When one enters the palace area, the first thing to see is the beautiful French style gardens. After having a lovely walk by the Bosphorus, one reaches the main building. The palace was constructed between 1842-1853 by one of the Ottoman Sultans, Sultan Abdulmecid. The architect was a famous Armenian architect, Nikogos Balyan. The palace reflects the European and more “modern” side of the Ottoman Empire. The Sultans moved to Dolmabahce Palace after its construction was finished and never went back to Topkapi Palace which hosted them nearly 4 centuries.

Before one enters into the main palace building, should wear blue nylons over shoes due to keepThe Grand Hall the palace clean. After wearing them, one faces with a huge entrance hall with beautiful French Baccarat crystal chandelliers. The palace altogether is decorated with French Baccarat and Czech Bohemian crystal chandelliers. The entrance hall is the hall where the visitors were used to welcomed. This part is the official part (Selamlik) of the Palace that was only open to the men. The women and the children lived in a different part called “the Harem”. The Sultan’s bedrooms were also in the Harem Part. The founder of Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk died in this palace in 1938 of sirosis disease. He actually lived in Ankara, Turkey’s capital, but he used to come to Istanbul quite often and Dolmabahce Palace was his residence when he visited Istanbul. His room is also in the Harem Part of the Palace. There are many portraits in the palace by famous artists, like Aivazosvky of Russia. It’s a very ornate palace with its 285 rooms, 43 large halls and 6 Turkish baths. The large old carpets on the floor are Hereke Carpets which were exclusively woven for the palaces. Some rooms have a great parquet floor with three different woods (ebony, mahogany, rose wood) inlaid into each other by using no nails. Many of the palace fabrics and the curtains were also coming from Hereke, a small town 50 miles,70 kms. to the east of Istanbul. The palace fabrics today were replaced by new ones which are very similar to the original ones.

Chora Church Museum

Chora Church Museum
Chora Church (Kariye Camii in Turkish) is the most interesting Byzantine church after Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The importance of the church does not come from the building itself , the frescoes and the mosaics are superb and reflect the magnificient heritage of Byzantine Art. The Chora Church Museum is open every day from 9 a.m to 4:30 p.m except Wed. The admission fee is 10 YTL. (6,5 EUR or 8 USD)

The word “Chora” means “in the countryside” in Greek because of the original church which was outside the city walls. There are no remains left from the original church and the first form of the present structure dates back to 11C. The church was founded by Maria Doukaina, mother-in-law of Alexius Comnenos I between 1077-1081. Today’s church was constructed after two centuries, the walls were revetted with superb mosaics and a pareclession was added decorated with beautiful frescoes. The founder of the church was Theodore Metochites who served as a prime minister during the time of EmperorAndronicus Palaeologus I. He was also an astronomer, poet, theologian and philosopher. Actually he lived a very sad life, after Palaeologus was replaced by another emperor, he was sent to exie. After he came back to Konstantinople, he devoted himself to the church as a monk and he died there. Early in the 16C, the church was converted to a mosque by Atik Ali Pasha and the mosaics were covered with plaster. In 1948, it was restored by Byzantine Institute of America and opened as a museum in 1958.
The mosaics in Chora Museum dates back to 14th C and they can be divided into 4 parts, the ones on the nave, outer narthex(entrance), inner narthex and frescoes in pareclession(funerary chapel)

Nave; (1) Koimesis, the Dormition of the Virgin. Before ascending to Heaven, her last sleep. Jesus is holding an infant, symbol of Mary’s soul; (2) Jesus Christ; (3) The Virgin Mary.
Inner Narthex; (4) The Enthroned Christ with the Donor, Theodore Metochites presenting a model of his church; (5) St. Peter; (6) St. Paul; (7) Deesis, Christ and the Virgin Mary (without St. John the Baptist) with two donors below; (8) Genealogy of Christ; (9) Religious and noble ancestors of Christ.

The mosaics in the first three bays of the inner narthex give an account of the Virgin’s birth and life. Some of them are as follows: (10) Rejection of Joachim’s offerings; (11) Annunciation of St. Anne, the angel of the Lord announcing to Anne that her prayer for a child has been heard; (12) Meeting of Joachim and Anne; (13) Birth of the Virgin Mary; (14) First seven steps of the Virgin; (15) The Virgin given affection by her parents; (16) The Virgin blessed by the priests; (17) Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple; (18) The Virgin receiving bread from an Angel; (19) The Virgin receiving the skein of purple wool, as the priests decided to have the attendant maidens weave a veil for the Temple; (20) Zacharias praying, when it was the time to marry for the Virgin, High Priest Zacharias called all the widowers together and placed their rods on the altar, praying for a sign showing to whom she should be given; (21) The Virgin entrusted to Joseph; (22) Joseph taking the Virgin to his house; (23) Annunciation to the Virgin at the well; (24) Joseph leaving the Virgin, Joseph had to leave for six months on business and when he returned the Virgin was pregnant and he is suspicious of that.

Bosphorus Cruise

Bosphorus Cruise
Bosphorus is the name of the strait which lies between Europe and Asia. The strait Bosphorus connects the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea and its length is approximately 30 km., 21 mile long. It runs in the general direction of NE to SW and varying greatly in width from 700 m. 0.45 mile to over 3500m. 2 miles at its widest. Its depth is generally 50-75 m., 150-200 feet but at some points reach to 100 m. 300 feet. There are two strong currents in the sea, one is from the Black Sea towards the Sea of Marmara which runs from the surface due to the low salt density and level difference of two seas. The other current lies from the reverse side, from the deep, towards the Black Sea. Because of the dangerous currents and the narrowness of the strait, all the ships passing through the strait should have pilot captains.
Bosphorus Cruise is a must-see tour for the Istanbul visitors because it is a wonderful opportunity to observe the both sides of Istanbul. There are municipal ferries which operate daily three times from Eminonu, port number 3.(BOGAZ HATTI). The first ferry is at 10:35 am (runs all year round), the second one is at 12:00 am and the last one is at 1:35 pm. (only in summer). The ferry is a traditional one, which has seats inside and outside the interior. After the ferry departs, it first makes a stop in Besiktas, which is the downtown of the city. The Dolmabahce Palace could be seen here.
Later, you see the beautiful houses along the European Side, the Ciragan Palace Hotel and many other lovely buildings from 19th and early 20th C. On the way, the ferry passes by the huge European Fortress which was constructed by Sultan Mehmed II in 1452 before he conquered Istanbul. Then the ferry moves to the Asian Side and you see the old restored Turkish Houses(Yali) which are just on the waterfront. In Bosphorus, there is no low-hide tide, so the houses can be so near to the sea level. Then the ferry passes through “Kanlica”, a lovely village which is famous for its yoghurt. And it passes to “Yenikoy “on the European Side and makes another stop. In Yenikoy, Turkey’s ex prime minister Mrs. Tansu Ciller has a big Yali(old restored Turkish house). Then the ferry goes back to Asian Side and then comes back to Europe, to a fishing village called “Sariyer”. If one likes, he/she may leave the ferry and come back to city after having a walk in Sariyer or if one wants to enjoy it all day long, he/she can stay till the ferry comes to Anadolukavagi. It is a great place to have fish, fresh vegetables, fruits and raki, traditional Turkish drink. After staying there for two hours, the ferry comes back to Eminonu, where one gets on the ferry.
Aboard the ferry, you may enjoy fresh orange juice, apple tea, ordinary tea and yoghurt which are sold by loud waiters….”Orange juuuice, apppleee teeeaaa, yoghııırt…

istanbul shopping

istanbul shopping
Here is Istanbul….While getting the most out of shopping, does not this metropolis city impress you with the contrast of modern with traditional? Now, let's walk through the Nuruosmaniye gate of the Grand Bazaar (Kapali Carsi) as we breathe in some history. You can not take your eyes off of shop displays filled with many gorgeous merchandise from jewellery to leatherwear, to carpets. Now, let's walk down to the wonderful aroma of the Egyptian Bazaar (Misir Carsisi). This is definitely going to make you feel like you are walking through history. A small antique piece can easily be reached at Cukurcuma, Horhor or Sisli. Although walking in this city is like walking in time, different shopping centres dispersed throughout the city can make you reach the contemporary designs. You can find the elite boutiques of the world famous name brands under the 19th century buildings in Nisantasi and Tesvikiye, or in elegant stores in Bagdat Caddesi. This is Istanbul…a city where you can derive joy from shopping.

The Grand Bazaar (or Covered Bazaar, Turkish: Kapaliçarsi ("Covered Bazaar")) in Istanbul is one of the largest covered markets in the world with more than 58 streets and 4,000 shops, and has between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily. It is well known for its jewelry, pottery, spice, and carpet shops. Many of the stalls in the bazaar are grouped by type of goods, with special areas for leather coats, gold jewelry and the like. The bazaar contains two bedestens (domed masonry structures built for storage and safe keeping), the first of which was constructed between 1455 and 1461 by the order of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror.

The bazaar was vastly enlarged in the 16th century, during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, and in 1894 underwent a major restoration following an earthquake.Major sectionsThe Grand Bazaar is a massive labyrinth of 4000 shops lining up the flanks of 58 covered streets.Inner Bedesten : It was the first building to rise in Kapaliçarsi, actually it is the Old Bedestan which forms the backbone of the bazaar. The names of the gates are: Bouquinistes, Hat Shops, Jewelry Shops and Costume Shops.Sandal Bedesten : It has the most number of domes in Kapaliçarsi. At present it can be accessed through two gates, one is through the main gate and the other is through the Nuruosmaniye district.Other sections of the Grand Bazaar: The architectural design of the roads making up other sections apart from the two bedestens is not symmetrical and geometrical; it has a scattered nature due to its formation which took many centuries with new parts being added. In this way, it stays away from the closed bazaar style of the West and has a character of an Oriental bazaar. This laid back settlement and scattered nature prevents the bazaar from being dull, and at the same time gives it a romantic flavour. Such a complicated structure and settlement not only maintains the monumental state of the bazaar, but also makes it a palace for shopping.GatesThe Grand Bazaar has four main gates situated at the ends of its two major streets which intersect near the southwestern corner of the bazaar. One street combines the Bayezid II Mosque and Bayezid Square with Nuruosmaniye MosqueTo watch the movie of Grand Bazaar, please click...

The Spice Bazaar, (Turkish: 'Misir Çarsisi', Egyptian Bazaar) in Istanbul, Turkey is one of the oldest bazaars in the city. Located in Eminönü, it is the second largest covered shopping complex after the Grand Bazaar. There are different accounts regarding the origin of the name of the bazaar. Various spices from the Orient were offered here in the past, Egyptian Bazaar was so named because the spices used to be imported from Egypt. On the other hand, in the Byzantine period, the site of the Spice Bazaar was the centre of corn trade. And the word misir has a double meaning in Turkish: "Egypt" and "corn". The Spice Bazaar was designed by the chief court architect Koca Kasim Aga, but completed by architect Mustafa in 1660.To watch the movie of Spice Bazaar, please click...The open-air bazaars in Istanbul are named either according to the neighborhood or according to the day on which they are held. All kinds of good quality, low-priced goods from clothing to kitchen utensils can be bought in these bazaars. The bazaars in Etiler and Yesilkoy begin early in the morning and last until sunset. There are bazaars in Bakirkoy and Besiktas on Saturday, in Fatih on Wednesday, in Kadikoy on Tuesday, and in Findikzade on Friday.

istanbul history : The ottoman empire

THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE

In the year 1453, the army of Fatih Sultan Mehmet II (Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror) conquered the city. First of all, the oldest buildings and the formerly magnificent but dilapidated city walls were restored. On the ruins of the Byzantine foundations, the buildings of the basic institutions of the Ottomans were built. The great water system with its huge cisterns was repaired and returned to use. The city had developed its Ottoman identity, resembling its present character.

With the addition of the buildings of the famous architect (Mimar) Sinan, the city had again become the capital of a great empire. Together with the remaining population after the conquest, people coming from all over the empire, from all kinds of ethnic origins and religions, created a colorful mixture. In Istanbul - the new Constantinopolis - the cultural variety brought in by the immigrants enriched the cultural texture of the city. The bedesten where the merchants were settled and the many hans where the craftsmen were to be found turned into centers that enabled this harbor city to develop trade with the outside world. Huge markets were built, further supporting trade. During the period of the height of Ottoman imperial power, the city was covered all over with tulips, in what is known as the"Tulip Era." In the 19th century, efforts of modernization were undertaken. Istanbul entered the 20th century worn out and burdened by its history as the capital city of three great empires. At that time, the Ottomans were just about to end their imperial period of 630 years.

HISTORY & SIGHTSEEING

Istanbul is an old city, you can see the remains of many ancient civilizations and their culture in harmony with Turkish culture. The old versus the new, the traditional versus the modern is a conflict a visitor often observes. The city is full of contrasts, and colorful views, Where the blowing winds from the seven peaks of Anatolian Olympos merge into each other... Where Amazon's cooled their bodies in the waves that break apart from the Black Sea and roll mightily against the shore ... Where love is symbolized in the Tower of Leandros ... Where stand the rocks of Symplegad that brought nightmares to the Argonauts ... Built on seven hills on Asia and Europe ... Capital of three empires ... Where romance and traffic jam go hand in hand ... Lively and exciting ... A world metropolis ... That is Istanbul ... Would you like us to guide you through this legendary city? Shopping Guide for Istanbul, Turkey

Shopping Guide for Istanbul, Turkey
Think of shopping in Istanbul and it is probably the Grand Bazaar that first springs to mind. The Grand Bazaar first saw its beginnings as 2 wooden bedestans, or warehouses with individual cells for stalls, named the Cevahir Bedesten and Sandal Bedesten, erected during Mehmet the Conqueror's reign towards the end of the fifteenth century.

The chance of being destroyed by fire necessitated that they be rebuilt in stone and they have since been absorbed into the core of the Bazaar today. Originally its profits were to go to compensate the ongoing expenses of the Aya Sophia.

It invariably grew and expanded, as did its trade, incorporating more and more shops into its environs. Today it covers an entire area of 30 hectares and has almost 4400 shops, 40 hans (a type of night stop-over where dealers could unload their wares) and encompasses over 60 streets. Its nucleus consists of 3 parallel streets between Nurosmaniye and Beyazit, the first comprising mostly of jewelery outlets, the second of carpets, and the third of textiles.

In the days gone by, each class of wares operated under a traditional guild system whereby one stall having reached a particular target sale that day would then direct further customers to other stalls in that guild. In this way they supported each others trade and formed a closely knit family. However this tradition no longer continues today.

Shopping centers have become a part of daily life in Istanbul, and there are now several in different parts of the city. They fit in well with the rapid pace of life today, saving precious time by offering a wider diversity under a single roof. Istanbul is no stranger to the shopping center, with its traditional covered bazaars like the Kapaliçarsi, (the famous Grand Bazaar), the Egyptian Bazaar and shopping streets like Mahmutpasa. But in past times shopping expeditions to these centers were different in concept. In the days leading up to important events like religious holidays, weddings or engagements, it was customary for the whole family to go together to buy new clothes, shoes, handkerchiefs, and household linen and other domestic articles for the trousseaus of girls about to be married. On such special occasions shopping had a ceremonial character.

Modern shopping centers, on the other hand, are not only places to shop but also to pass the time and in various leisure pursuits and forms of entertainment. While these modern malls cannot be said to harmonize with the cultural texture of the city in architectural terms, and are not perhaps aesthetic, they make full use of the latest technology and offer facilities completely unrelated to shopping. For example, in the center of Galleria there is an ice skating rink, while Carousel has a roundabout in the middle, to name but a few. Galleria was Istanbul’s - and indeed Turkey’s - first modern shopping mall. Situated in the western suburb of Ataköy, it was opened by then prime minister Turgut Özal in 1988 and espoused as a symbol of modern life. For several years Galleria was without competitors, but it had blazed a trail down which others were to follow.

Akmerkez in Etiler, Carousel in Bakirköy, and on the Asian bank of the city Capitol and Carrefour opened in rapid succession. As well as locally make goods these centers contained shops selling world famous brand names. Galleria reflected the changing face of Turkey in the late 1980s, with scores of shops selling a wide range of goods which included a high percentage of imports, cafes and restaurants which made going there a popular day out. At weekends in particular people flocked there from all over the city.

With its 140 shops Galleria attracts an average weekly total of 300,000 people, while on weeks when there are public holidays or special days like Mother’s Day this number can be as high as 500,000.In 1995 Akmerkez was declared to be Europe’s Best Shopping Center by the International Council of Shopping Centers, and in 1998 was selected as the World’s Best Shopping Center by the same organization and received the International Design and Development Award.

Akmerkez opened in 1993 and is visited by between two and two-and-a half million people every month. At weekends and before public holidays and new year the number of visitors soars to around 100,000 people daily. Akmerkez shopping center has 240 shops and a total floor area of 180,000 square meters on four floors. Above these rise two blocks of office premises of 14 and 17 stories respectively, and a 24 story residential block. The highest proportion of customers come from the surrounding districts of Etiler, Levent and Ulus, which are in walking distance, and from the European shore of the Bosphorus. They generally visit the center during the week and do most of their household shopping here.

The second group of customers come from districts slightly further away, such as Nisantasi But at weekends people from all over the city are to be found here. Visitors spend an average 3.5 hours in the center, compared to the world average of 2.5 hours. During the summer, excursions are organized to the shopping center from nearby hotels, and during the winter there are bus services from large business centers such as Sabanci Center, Yapi Kredi Plaza and Maya Center.Capitol shopping center also opened in 1993, and is now visited by 12 million people a year. It has 120 shops, 8 cinemas, cafes and open and closed car parks.

This is a spacious shopping center around a huge central well through which daylight pours. On special occasions the number of visitors rises to 80,000 a day, mainly from the east bank districts of the city.Carousel, which opened in 1995, pulls in approximately 50,000 people per day, and 18 million people a year. Four leading banks have branches here, and its attractions include discussion panels, music recitals, an art gallery where exhibitions by both amateur and professional artists are held, book signing sessions by famous authors, and special weeks featuring different countries.

There is also a ticket sales service for art and cultural events all over Istanbul. One of Istanbul’s youngest shopping centers is Polcenter, which opened in Levent on 16 December 1998. It has 52 shops and covers an area of 15,000 square meters The majority of its customers are from the banks and companies which have offices in the area. Polcenter is a three story shopping center over which are two large towers containing office premises. It has a three story car park.
